Civil War FieldIn contrast with the urban warfare nature of modern combat, the American Civil War was the first major conflict to evolve into trench warfare. Battle engineers and high command officers did not yet fully understand the tactics or implications, and some strategies still deployed a "line 'em up and mow 'em down" approach, but mobility and barricades became the dichotomy of methods employed in this era.
